Spider Farmer G-Series vs SE-Series: What the Extra Money Buys

Two ladders from one maker, stepping through the same wattages at an 11 to 16 percent price gap. Read side by side, the published spec sheets say the premium mostly buys rated lifespan and a tidier fixture — and, at one rung of three, a little more light.

Spider Farmer sells two ladders that climb the same rungs: G1500 and SE1500 at 150 watts, G3000 and SE3000 at 300, G4500 and SE4500 at 320. At every matched rung the SE costs more, and no page sets the two side by side on the numbers that decide it.

This is a reading of the paperwork, not a bench report: the company’s own product pages and warranty terms as they stood on 29 August 2026. Nothing was measured here; every figure is the manufacturer’s. The warranty on all six fixtures runs five years — long enough that you should settle whether a home grow is lawful where you live before you settle which light hangs over it.

The three matched pairs, as published

Start at the top of the ladder

The 320-watt pair settles itself. The G4500 and SE4500 publish the same photon output — 913 μmol/s — at the same draw, the same 2.85 μmol/J efficacy and the same coverage: 2x4 core, 3x5 maximum. That day the G4500 was $189.99, the SE4500 $219.99. Thirty dollars for identical published output.

At 300 watts it depends which G3000 number you read. Against the spec table’s 824 μmol/s, the SE3000’s 856 is a real gap — 3.9 percent, for eleven percent more money. Against the 852 in the description above it, the rung is a wash. The 150-watt pair carries no such ambiguity: 428 against 426. Two photons per second is not an argument.

What the premium does appear to buy

Beyond that one rung, two things — both real, neither photometric.

The first is rated lifespan: 100,000 hours on every SE page against 80,000 on every G page. That is a projection, not a tested result, but 25 percent is the largest published gap between the lines — on a twelve-hour schedule, years not months.

The second is the shape of the thing. The G packing lists itemize a driver, a dimmer box, a power cord and driver hangers as separate parts. The SE lists give you the fixture, hanging hardware, a control cable and a manual, and name no driver at all. A remote driver must be hung somewhere; an integrated one cannot be moved out of the heat, and no SE spec table or packing list says which it uses. Ask before you order. One difference runs the other way: all three G tables list a 730 to 740 nanometre far-red band, and none of the three SE tables do. A difference rather than an upgrade — but it runs the length of the cheaper ladder.

The cons, with teeth

One page, two different PPF numbers. The G3000 page states 852 μmol/s in its description and 824 μmol/s in the specification table below — a 3.4 percent spread on the figure the purchase turns on. Dividing does not settle it: at the stated 300-watt draw, 824 works out to 2.75 μmol/J and 852 to 2.84, while the table prints 2.8. The same page prints that efficacy as “PPE: 2.8 μmol/s”, the unit for photon flux rather than efficacy. Small errors, sitting on the numbers that justify the price.

No independent listing is claimed anywhere. None of the six product pages mentions the DesignLights Consortium, and neither does the homepage. Listing is voluntary, so that is no fault in itself — but every number above is the maker marking its own homework. The consortium’s horticultural program has run on Version 4.0 requirements since 18 April 2025, with 6 January 2026 published as V3.0’s delist date, and its list is where an outside efficacy review would show up — the habit we set out when ‘DLC listed’ changed meaning. Search it rather than assume.

Five years, with conditions. The published warranty terms run five years on the SF, SE and G light series, but free claim shipping applies in year one only; after that the customer pays freight and the remedy shifts toward discounted replacement. Proof of purchase is required, and cover runs to the original purchaser only, on units bought through authorized channels. Read that last condition twice before buying on a marketplace.

“High yield” is in the listing titles. The G1500 and G4500 pages each headline a “High Yield LED Grow Light”. No fixture can carry that claim: yield is decided by genetics, environment and the grower. Treat it as branding.

Verdict

For a 2x4 tent, buy the G4500 and keep the thirty dollars; the SE4500 asks a premium for output its own spec table calls identical. At 2x2 the SE1500 wants sixteen dollars for two more photons a second and a longer rated lifespan — only the lifespan is worth weighing. At 3x3 the SE3000’s table does claim about four percent more light, for eleven percent more money. If your tent has nowhere for a driver box, ask which fixture carries its driver onboard — that answer, not the badge, should pick your line.
