How Long Are Cannabis Seeds Good For? A 2-Year Trial

How long are cannabis seeds good for? In a 24-month hemp trial, dry cool seed held up and damp warm seed died in months. Set beside the unsourced guides.

How long are cannabis seeds good for? Dry, sealed seed kept cool stayed usable through a full two-year trial; damp seed at room temperature can die in months. In a controlled 24-month hemp trial, seed at 14% moisture and 21 C was dead at the first three-month check, and the authors recommend under 8% moisture at 4 to 10 C.

This is an evergreen explainer. The trial was published in June 2025 and nothing in it expires.

How long are cannabis seeds good for, according to a measured trial?

The two guides read for this post give figures without citing a study in the text read. A controlled trial gives conditions. Cockson and colleagues at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and the University of Kentucky took industrial hemp seed (cultivar NWG2730), dried it to four moisture levels, sealed it in hermetic packets and stored it at four temperatures. They germination-tested at each step and ran a tetrazolium stain, a dye test for living tissue, at 3 and 24 months. This desk read the paper’s abstract page and the full text on ScholarWorks on 1 November 2026.

Do cannabis seeds go bad faster when warm or damp?

Both, and the trial found the two interact. The abstract says germination fell over time at 10% and 14% moisture, faster at warmer temperatures. The worst cell in the grid, wet and warm, was dropped from later testing because nothing in it was alive.

The paper also gathers older hemp work, and those figures are other researchers’ results, not Cockson’s. Suriyong et al. (2015) found room-temperature seed in plastic bags germinating below 30% after eight months. Jian et al. (2019) put safe storage at 25 C at 20.8 weeks for 8% moisture against 2.8 weeks at 14%.

Is the freezer better for long storage?

Not clearly, on this evidence. Seed at 6% and 8% moisture held at -20 C germinated at about 66% after 24 months while still staining around 90% viable. The authors read that gap as possible cold-induced dormancy and say further testing would be needed to confirm it. Seed that is alive but slow to wake costs the same season as dead seed if you give up on it.

What the trial cannot tell you

It is one hemp cultivar, two years long, sealed at measured moisture. It does not measure a seed bank’s drug-type strain, a packet opened every spring, or a decade in a drawer. Read it as a guide to conditions, not as a lifespan for your seeds.

The task that follows is the same either way: keep seed dry and cool, as in our storage guide, and before you trust an old packet, run the sample count in our viability guide. Then follow the germination steps.

Frequently asked questions

How long will weed seeds stay viable in the fridge?

No trial read for this post measured drug-type seed in a home fridge. The closest is Cockson et al. (2025): after storing sealed hemp seed for up to 24 months, the authors recommend 4 to 10 C with seed moisture under 8%. The fridge works when the seal keeps its damp out.

Do seeds go bad?

Yes. Seed is alive, and moisture plus warmth shorten its life. In the Cockson trial, hemp seed at 14% moisture and 21 C showed no germination and no viability at the first check, three months in. The same paper notes some commercial hemp lots losing half their germination within a year.

How long should my seeds last?

Nobody can give one honest number for every packet. Dry, sealed, cool seed held up across the full two years of the Cockson trial, which did not run longer. Damp seed at room temperature can be gone in months. The only reliable answer for a packet in hand is to germinate a small sample and count.

Store and germinate seed only where home cultivation is lawful for adults, and check your local laws before purchasing or germinating cannabis seeds.
