To know when to harvest CBD strains, start with the breeder’s flowering window, then cut when most trichomes have turned from clear to cloudy. Do not wait for seed. In a published hemp study, total cannabinoids peaked at full flowering and fell by seed maturity, while THC climbed steeply on the way to that peak.
This is an evergreen how-to. The one dated part is the US hemp definition near the end, and that part will need re-reading.
When to harvest CBD strains: the short method
Read the breeder’s window first. The weeks on the packet tell you when to start looking, not when to cut.
Check the trichomes with a loupe. Dutch Passion’s guide says most CBD growers wait until most trichomes have gone from clear to cloudy and use that as the harvest point, along with pistil colour and the general look of the bud.
Accept that outdoor weather may decide for you. The same guide notes that weather can force an early cut before CBD has quite peaked. A slightly early harvest beats a mouldy one.
Test if the number matters. Ripe CBD plants look exactly like ripe THC plants, the breeder says. The difference is chemical, and only a lab sees it.
How many weeks do CBD strains take?
This desk read Dutch Passion’s harvest guide on 18 October 2026. Its feminised CBD lines need 4 to 6 weeks of veg at 18 or more hours of light before bloom on 12/12. Its CBD autoflowers run about 9 to 13 weeks from germination, with 20 hours of light suggested indoors. The figures below are the breeder’s catalogue claims, not lab results.
| Variety | Type | Breeder’s time | Breeder’s CBD |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBD Charlotte’s Angel | Feminised | 11 weeks flowering | 15% |
| CBD Compassion | Feminised | 8 weeks flowering | 8% |
| CBD Kush | Feminised | 9 weeks flowering | 7.5% |
| CBD Auto Blackberry Kush | Autoflower | 13 weeks seed to harvest | 15% |
| CBD Auto Charlotte’s Angel | Autoflower | 13 weeks seed to harvest | 15% |
| CBD Auto Compassion Lime | Autoflower | 10-11 weeks seed to harvest | 13.5% |
| CBD Auto White Widow | Autoflower | 9-10 weeks seed to harvest | 7.5% |
| Auto CBD-Victory | Autoflower | 9 weeks seed to harvest | 4-6% CBDV |
What happens to CBD and THC as the plant ripens?
Trichome colour is a visual cue. A 2022 paper in Royal Society Open Science, by researchers at Khon Kaen University and the University of York, measured the chemistry instead. They harvested Finola, a commercial hemp seed variety, at four stages and analysed the tops, leaves and stems. This desk read the study’s abstract on PubMed on 18 October 2026; the week timings come from the paper’s methods, which describe plants raised in a growing chamber.
| Harvest | Stage | Weeks after seeding | What the abstract reports for the tops |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Vegetative | 4 | No figure given |
| 2 | Budding | 8 | THC 157 µg/g |
| 3 | Full flowering | 9 | Total cannabinoids 39,475 µg/g; CBD 21,161 µg/g; THC 9,873 µg/g |
| 4 | Seed maturity | 11 | Total cannabinoids 26,969 µg/g |
Two things follow. Waiting for seed cost about a third of the cannabinoids in this crop. And the THC jump arrived alongside the cannabinoid peak, not after it. By simple conversion, 10,000 µg/g is about 1 percent of dry weight, so 9,873 µg/g is roughly 1 percent. The abstract does not say whether that figure is delta-9 THC alone or THC plus THCA, so it cannot place the crop on either side of a legal line.
The authors conclude that harvesting the tops “after budding is preferable” for high CBD and low THC. That is their reading for an industrial Finola crop, and Finola flowers early. A drug-type CBD line on an 11-week bloom is a different plant, so take the shape of the curve, not the calendar.
Why does THC matter for a CBD harvest?
For most growers it is about effect. In the US it is also about definition. Federal law at 7 U.S.C. 1639o currently defines hemp as cannabis with not more than 0.3 percent delta-9 THC on a dry weight basis. Public Law 119-37 rewrites that as 0.3 percent total THC, including THCA, and the change was first due on 12 November 2026. According to the Congressional Research Service, read on 18 October 2026, P.L. 119-103 has delayed portions of the new definition to 11 December 2026. That date sits in a stopgap funding law and can move again. Our DEA and seed post sets the old and new texts side by side.
What a ripe plant contains comes from its seed. Our posts on very high CBD strains and how to grow CBD strains cover choosing a stable line and why one plant’s result does not speak for its siblings.
Frequently asked questions
When should you harvest CBD plants for maximum CBD?
Around full flowering, judged by the breeder’s window and mostly cloudy trichomes. In the Finola study, total cannabinoids in the tops peaked at full flowering and fell by seed maturity, so waiting for seed costs cannabinoids. The same study saw THC rise sharply into full flowering, so maximum CBD and minimum THC are not the same day.
When do you harvest a CBD autoflower?
Dutch Passion puts its CBD autoflowers at about 9 to 13 weeks from germination, depending on strain and phenotype, with 20 hours of daily light suggested indoors. Treat the catalogue weeks as the window and the trichomes as the decision: most growers cut when most heads have turned from clear to cloudy.
Does THC increase if you harvest a CBD plant later?
In the one study read for this post, yes, up to full flowering: THC in Finola tops went from 157 µg/g at budding to 9,873 µg/g at full flowering. The abstract gives no THC figure for seed maturity, so it says nothing about what happens after that. Your own plant needs a lab test to know.
What is the best time to harvest cannabis in general?
When the flowers are ripe for the plant’s purpose: inside the breeder’s stated window, with most trichomes cloudy and the pistils largely coloured. A CBD grower has a different trade, because the THC in a CBD-dominant plant is the part that can matter legally.
Grow only where home cultivation is lawful for adults, and check your local laws before purchasing or germinating cannabis seeds. The trichomes tell you the plant is ripe; only a test tells you what it made.
